Joey Xia’s works engages with issues related to the power dynamics and hysteria within the contemporary culture，under the backdrop of an unascertained globalization. Joey’s practice are accumulations of material, texture and color fused together with a mixture of craft-based techniques, which he sees as materials of utterance in themselves – to contain emotions in a gesture, meanwhile, the work maintains a constant tension between functionality and rituality by using industrial material and handcraft procedure。 Joey Xia (b.1992) lives and works in Shanghai since 2018. He receives BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Illinois in 2016. Joey Xia’s recent solo exhibition include: Few days in the Proterozoic Eon , Yell Space Shanghai , 2019. His works have also been included in many exhibitions, among many others: Being of Evils, Hive Center for Contemporary Art, Beijing, 2020, Shanghai Condo 2019 , Antenna Space, Shanghai、Advent , Qianshao ConteMporary Art Center, Shanghai, 2019、“2141” Rongyi Art Museum, Shanghai 2019 |
