    Gala Porras-Kim (b. 1984, Colombia) is a Los Angeles-based artist whose recent body of work problematizes knowability and authority, exploring linguistic and visual representations of ancient Mesoamerican and Korean American cultures within the institutional context in the neocolonial era.

  • Gala Porras-Kim (b. 1984, Colombia) is a Los Angeles-based artist whose recent body of work problematizes knowability and authority, exploring linguistic and visual representations of ancient Mesoamerican and Korean American cultures within the institutional context in the neocolonial era.

    Porras-Kim is participating in the upcoming ‘Working for the Future Past’, an exhibition featuring artists from the Latin American region, at Seoul Museum of Art. She is currently included in ‘A Universal History of Infamy’ at Los Angeles County Museum of Art as part of ‘Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA’. She was recently featured in Journal d’un travailleur métèque du futur at FRAC Pays de la Loire, Carquefou, France; ‘Made in L.A. 2016: <a, the, though, only>’ at the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; ‘Current LA’, Los Angeles Public Art Biennial; ‘Aún’, 44th National Salon of Artists, Bogotá, Colombia, ‘For Prospective Rock/Artifact Projection’ at the Bindery Projects, Minneapolis, and ‘Prospecting Notes About Sounds’ at the 18th Street Arts Center, Los Angeles. Forthcoming exhibitions will be held at the Headlands Center for the Arts, California, and the Bowdoin College Museum of Art, Maine. She received the Artadia Award and Rema Hort Mann Award in 2017, Joan Mitchell Foundation Award in 2016, Creative Capital Grant and Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Award in 2015, and California Community Foundation Fellowship in 2013. Porras-Kim holds a M. F. A. from the California Institute of the Arts and a M. A. in Latin American Studies from the University of California, Los Angeles.
