    Beatriz Cortez (b. 1970, El Salvador) is a Los Angeles-based artist and scholar. Her work explores simultaneity, the existence in different temporalities and different versions of modernity, particularly in relation to memory and loss in the aftermath of war, the experience of immigration, and imaginaries of the future.

  • Biography
  • Beatriz Cortez (b. 1970, El Salvador) is a Los Angeles-based artist and scholar. Her work explores simultaneity, the existence in different temporalities and different versions of modernity, particularly in relation to memory and loss in the aftermath of war, the experience of immigration, and imaginaries of the future.

    She is currently included in the exhibition ‘Mundos Alternos: Art and Science Fiction in the Americas’ at UCR (University of California, Riverside) ARTSblock as part of ‘Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA’ and at Ballroom Marfa in Texas. She has exhibited at the Orange County Museum of Art, Newport Beach, the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, the Vincent Price Art Museum, Los Angeles, the Grand Central Art Center, Santa Ana, the Museo Municipal Tecleño, El Salvador, and the Museo de Arte y Diseño Contemporáneo, Costa Rica. Cortez holds a M. F. A. from the California Institute of the Arts and a Ph. D. in Latin American Literature from Arizona State University. She teaches Central American Studies at California State University, Northridge.
