    Clarissa Tossin (b. 1973, Brazil) is based in Los Angeles and Cambridge. Her practice is centered on investigating the promises, legacies, and failures of modernity, globalism, and utopian idealism. Her recent project explores the performative relationship of ancient Mayan iconography and architectonic forms to language.

  • Clarissa Tossin (b. 1973, Brazil) is based in Los Angeles and Cambridge. Her practice is centered on investigating the promises, legacies, and failures of modernity, globalism, and utopian idealism. Her recent project explores the performative relationship of ancient Mayan iconography and architectonic forms to language.

    She is currently included in the exhibitions Condemned To Be Modern at the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery and Mundos Alternos: Art and Science Fiction in the Americas at UCR (University of California, Riverside) ARTSblock, both part of Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA. Tossin received her M. F. A. from the California Institute of the Arts and her B. F. A. from Fundação Armando Álvares Penteado, São Paulo. She has exhibited at the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, the Museum of Latin America Art, Long Beach, the Queens Museum, New York, Wesleyan University’s Zilkha Gallery, Connecticut, Wattis Institute, San Francisco, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Detroit, SITE Santa Fe, and the Blaffer Art Museum, Houston. She has been the grant recipient of the Radcliffe Institute Fellowship from the Harvard University (2017-18), the California Community Foundation (2014), Fundação Joaquim Nabuco (2015 and 2014), Artpace San Antonio (2013), and the Center for Cultural Innovation (2013 and 2012).
